Super Eagles star, Ademola Lookman, has inspired Atalanta to a 3-0 win at Serie A leaders, Napoli, scoring twice for the visitors at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium in Naples.
The result, capped by Mateo Retegui’s goal in the second half, handed Napoli a first loss since the opening day of the season to bring an end to the league leaders’ nine-match unbeaten run.
Atalanta shoot up to second place in the Serie A standings as a result of the win and cut Napoli’s lead at the top to just three points, pending results from other matches.
Lookman wasted no time to open the scoring in the 10th minute, running on to a headed pass from Marten de Roon and striking from close range to put Atalanta in the lead.
The Nigerian forward, favourite to win the Player of the Year at the CAF Awards, struck again in the 31st minute, curling a shot past goalkeeper Alex Meret as the league leaders struggled to contain the Atalanta onslaught.
Scott McTominay came closest to scoring for the hosts, striking the post with a powerful shot, but his effort was a rare highlight in an otherwise subdued display from Antonio Conte’s side.
Atalanta’s control continued late into the game, and in added time, Retegui sealed the win, notching his 11th goal of the season to make it 3-0 and extend his lead in the Serie A golden boot race.
