Premier League leaders Liverpool restored their seven-point lead at the top of the English top-flight following a nervy 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Anfield on Sunday.
The Reds came into the fixture with the knowledge that a win would see them re-establish their seven-point gap over Arsenal, after the Gunners earned a 2-0 win over relegation-threatened Leicester City on Saturday.
And Arne Slot’s side started strongly, with their first chance coming when Diogo Jota collected the ball from inside the box but his sliced shot flew just wide after eight minutes.
Liverpool were in front seven minutes later through Luis Diaz – the Colombian displayed good awareness in the six-yard box before using his body to knock the ball past Wolves goalkeeper, Jose Sa.
Dominik Szoboszlai had a chance to make it 2-0 in the 27th minute, but his effort from outside the box went narrowly wide of the left post while Jota’s low shot five minutes later was saved by Sa from close range.
The second goal would come 10 minutes before half-time when Liverpool were awarded a penalty after Diaz was brought down in the box by the Wolves goalkeeper, with Mo Salah stepping up to convert the penalty for his 23rd in the league this season.
But the second half was a different story as Wolves attempted to haul themselves back into the contest through Marshall Munetsi whose shot was kept out by Alisson Becker in the 50th minute.
Salah nearly got his brace of the afternoon minutes later but his goal was ruled out for offside. The Reds then thought they had another penalty in the 58th minute, but VAR revealed that no contact was made on Jota in the box.
Matheus Cunha pulled one back for the visitors with a fine effort from the edge of the box to set up a tense finish but in the end, it was the Reds that held on for a narrow win. Wolves, on their part, remain on 19 points, just two points off the relegation zone.
