Mykolas Alekna made history as he became the first male athlete to surpass the 75-metre mark in the Discus event on his way to setting a new world record at the World Athletics Continental Tour in Oklahoma.

The 22-year-old Lithuanian twice set new world bests in Ramona-Oklahoma, throwing 74.89m with his first attempt and then improving to 75.56m in round four as he won the event.

He threw 74.35m at the same venue last year to break the longest-standing men’s world record in athletics, which had stood since 1986.

Alekna, who won silver at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, smashed his own previous world record by more than a metre while Australia’s Matt Denny finished second with a throw of 74.78m – 43cm further than the previous world record.
