Barcelona have reopened a three-point gap on arch-rivals, Real Madrid, at the top of La Liga following a comprehensive 4-1 demolition of Girona on Sunday.

The duo of Fermin Lopez and Robert Lewandowski both tested Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga early on as the hosts dominated proceedings.

Barca soon thought they had scored when Jules Kounde tucked home but his effort was disallowed after he was ded to have strayed offside.

Two minutes before the interval, Barcelona went in front after Lamine Yamal’s free kick was deflected in off Girona defender Ladislav Krejci for an own goal.

However, the visitors struck back after the restart against the run of play when Dutch forward Arnaut Danjuma curled his shot past Wojciech Szczesny.

Barcelona would restore their lead just after the hour-mark when Fermin Lopez headed a ball across the box and Robert Lewandowski converted with an acrobatic finish at the far post.

Lewandowski then made it 3-1 in the 77th minute from a counter-attack when Frenkie de Jong found him in the box and he curled a low shot past Gazzaniga, taking the Polish international’s tally at the top of La Liga’s scoring chart to 25, three clear of closest challenger Kylian Mbappe.

Substitute, Ferran Torres, went on to make it 4-1 when he smartly controlled a pass before finding the bottom corner, while the impressive Lamine Yamal almost made it five only for his curling shot came off the crossbar.

The victory moves Barcelona to 66 points from 29 games, three points more than defending champions Real Madrid.
