Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took full advantage of championship leaders, Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, battling each other out to win the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas.

Leclerc’s win topped a good day for the Scuderia team as Carlos Sainz finished in second place to see Ferrari secure a one-two podium finish in the US for the first time in 18 years.

Meanwhile, Norris, who started the race in pole position, ended up in third initially before a penalty saw him drop out of the podium places altogether, as Verstappen moved to third as a result – boosting his ambition to retain the Championship yet again.

The RedBull and McLaren drivers provided the drama in Austin right from the green light, with Norris forced off the track in turn one to avoid colliding with Verstappen who was making his move for the lead, only for the rivals to see Leclerc sneak past them into the lead.

Leclerc, who started fourth on the grid, maintained his composure for the rest of the rest to cross the chequered flag first for the third time this season.

Leclerc and Sainz give Ferrari a first 1-2 podium finish in the US since 2006.

The win draws him level with Norris for number of GP wins this season, as the Frenchman also saw the gap on Norris in the championship standings close to 22 points.

Norris on his part is now 57 points behind Verstappen, who can’t complain too much about how his weekend went, having won the Sprint a day before the main race to score some valuable points.

Securing third spot following the five-second penalty handed to Norris only adds to his cause to retain the world title again. Norris was penalised after being adjudged to have gained an advantage on Verstappen in the closing stages of the race when he went off track to get past the Dutch driver.

And with five races to go, the window for Norris to dethrone Verstappen is fast closing.
