Manchester United avoided a 16th top-flight defeat of the season, leaving it till the sixth minute of added time to snatch a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth in a Premier League match at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils came into the encounter knowing that their top-flight status for another season had been preserved, following confirmation of Ipswich Town’s relegation down to the Championship earlier on Saturday.

That said, it was the hosts who got their noses in front midway into the opening half after Antoine Semenyo fired a low shot from inside the box which beat United goalkeeper Andre Onana in the 23rd minute.

Bournemouth had chances to extend their advantage, with Dango Ouattara hitting the post from a free-kick shortly after the break. However, it all went downhill for the Cherries as striker Evanilson was sent off for a lunge on Noussair Mazraoui following a VAR review in the 70th minute.

United soon started to pile on the pressure as they began to benefit from their numerical advantage. The Red Devils late flurry of pressure paid off deep into stoppage time as Rasmus Hojlund diverted Manuel Ugarte’s effort past Kepa Arrizabalaga from close range for his ninth goal of the season.

The result moves United up to 14th on the standings, with 39 points after 34 matches played. Bournemouth on their part are 10th with 50 points.
