Paris Saint-Germain find themselves in the elimination zone of the new-format Champions League after a last-gasp Angel Correa goal condemned Luis Enrique’s side to defeat at the hands of Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.
The game started well for PSG in Paris as teenage midfield sensation, Warren Zaire-Emery, put the home side in front, but Nahuel Molina restored parity for the Spanish visitors minutes later before Correa’s late dagger left the Ligue 1 leaders crestfallen at the end.
Atletico move up into the play-off zone of the Champions League with their second win of the campaign while PSG go out of that play-off zone into the elimination zone as a result of their second defeat in Europe.
Portuguese midfielder, Vitinha, lamented the efforts of PSG coming to nothing, but staying defiant that the club will keep on trying as they look to turn their fortunes around.
“We tried and tried, right up to the last minute,” Vitinha said after the match. “Unfortunately, we conceded a goal on their last chance. Would things be easier with a real centre-forward? Well, you never know. That’s our gameplan. We’ll get better at it.”
The result leaves the French giants needing a crucial win from their next match which is trip to face Bayern Munich in Germany after the international break in a repeat of the 2020 Champions League final.
