Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli has beaten the in-form McLaren duo of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris, as well as world champion Max Verstappen to claim the Miami GP Sprint race pole position and become the youngest driver in Formula One history to take pole position at the sprint event in Miami and in any race format of the sport.

18-year-old Antonelli beat McLaren driver and championship leader Oscar Piastri by 0.045 seconds, as well as the second McLaren of Lando Norris who came third, while Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Antonelli’s Mercedes team-mate George Russell had to settle for fourth and fifth fastest respectively.

Antonelli, whose previous highest grid placing this season was fifth, will be looking to convert his pole position in the sprint session into a first race win.

Meanwhile, Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton, who won the first sprint of the season in China from pole, was seventh-fastest, one place behind team-mate Charles Leclerc while the trio of Alex Albon of Williams, Racing Bulls’ Isack Hadjar and Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin completed the top 10.
