Filipino wildcard Alexandra Eala has seen her fairytale run at the Miami Open come to an end, following a three-set defeat to American fourth seed, Jessica Pegula, in the semi-finals early on Friday.

The 19-year-old, who is the lowest-ranked semi-finalist in Miami Open history, put up a spirited display but ultimately fell short, losing 7-6, 5-7, 6-3 to Pegula in a contest that lasted two hours and 24 minutes.

Eala had only won two WTA main draw matches heading to the Miami Open, but embarked on an incredible run that saw her beat three Grand Slam champions in Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek on her way to the semi-finals.

While it is heartbreak for her and the Philippines, Eala will get consolation from the fact that she will break into the top 100 for the first time when the latest WTA rankings are released next week.

As for Jessica Pegula, she will take on three-time major champion Aryna Sabalenka in the Miami Open Final on Saturday.
