2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko has stunned world number one Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets to win the Stuttgart Open in Germany on Monday.
27-year-old Ostapenko, who had won just one set during her three previous meetings with Sabalenka which all ended in defeats, kept the pressure throughout the final in Germany on her way to a 6-4, 6-1 victory against the Belarusian.
The defeat to Ostapenko sees Sabalenka lose her fourth Stuttgart Open Final, having lost to Ashleigh Barty in 2021 and Iga Swiatek in both the 2022 and 2023 editions.
Ostapenko, who also beat world number two Iga Swiatek in the quarter-final stage on her way to the trophy, claims the ninth WTA title of her career and a first on clay since winning the French Open in 2017.
