Simone Inzaghi’s future at Inter Milan has been decided for now following the Serie A side’s humiliating 5-0 drubbing in the UEFA Champions League final at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in Munich on Saturday.

Inter were making a second final appearance in the last three seasons, having lost narrowly to Manchester City in 2023, but the margin this time was far more than anyone bargained for as PSG made history with the biggest margin victory in Champions League final history.

Goals by former Inter Milan man Achraf Hakimi and Desire Doue with a brace set the rampant Ligue 1 champions on the way to the title at the Allianz Arena, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Senny Mayulu adding salt to injury for Inzaghi’s team.

The emphatic loss sealed a disappointing end of the season for the team which was on the brink of winning a treble just a fortnight ago, only to lose against AC Milan in the Coppa Italia semi-final, before conceding a stoppage time penalty in their penultimate Serie A match against Lazio.

Inter would go on to finish one point behind Napoli in the Serie A title race, before losing the Champions League title to PSG. However, the club’s hierarchy is happy to have the former Italy and Lazio striker remain as head coach, having taken on the job in 2021.

“This defeat will not have an impact. Almost all the credit for this positive cycle is due to his professionalism and abilities. If he wants to continue, we are happy,” club President Giuseppe Marotta said after the match.

“We are meeting with the coach because this club is not used to letting a manager go into the final year of his contract,” Marotta added. “We are meeting with the coach because this club is not used to letting a manager go into the final year of his contract.”

Inzaghi has guided the Nerazzurri to one Scudetto and two Coppa Italia titles in five seasons at the San Siro outfit, and is expected within club circles to still be in charge for their FIFA Club World Cup campaign this June.
