San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama will be out for the 2024-25 NBA regular season after being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, the team announced Thursday.
News of Wemby’s injury comes as Spurs prepare to face the Phoenix Suns in their first match after the NBA All-Star weekend, in which the French centre participated.
‘The condition was discovered when Wembanyama returned to San Antonio following the All-Star Game in San Francisco,” the team said in a statement. “Wembanyama is expected to miss the remainder of the 2024-25 regular season.”
Spurs, currently 12th in the West with a 23-29 record, are optimistic about Wembanyama’s long-term health and that he will recover to play next season, according to Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News.
Before the injury, Wembanyama led the NBA in blocked shots (3.8 bpg) and averaged 24.3 points, 11 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game.
