“I was clumsy with my language” – Jamie Carragher Addresses AFCON Comments after Backlash

Football pundit and former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher, has moved to address heavy backlash that followed his comments where he declared that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is not a major tournament.

Speaking during coverage of Tuesday night’s action in the UEFA Champions League, Carragher admitted he was clumsy with his comments about AFCON, explaining that he was only trying to show why Mohamed Salah’s chances of winning the Ballon d’Or could be reduced.

“I was clumsy with my language in describing AFCON as ‘not a major tournament’. I was trying to explain the merit of Mo Salah winning the Ballon d’Or,” Carragher said during the broadcast for CBS Sports.

He added, “There are five major tournaments out there besides the World Cup for their continents… but some of them don’t resonate with the people who vote for the Ballon d’Or and that for me was not an opinion, that was like a fact in terms of looking at who’s won the Ballon d’Or in the last 40/50 years.”
