Working out on a regular basis is a great activity for the body and mind, but it is also important to know how to avoid getting injured while engaging in physical fitness activities and this post is here to help you achieve just that.
When the weather is nice, it is easier to walk outside, take a swim, and more. But when there is an increase in temperature, there is a great need to bear in mind the additional safety concerns that come with the hot weather.
A set of recommendations by the United States Department of Health and Human Sciences, published by he Michigan State University Extension, have been outlined here to stay safe while keeping fit.
Time of Day
Better to exercise in the morning or the evening while it is cooler. Workout in the shade if possible during the heat of the day.
Hydration
It is advised that you drink water before, during, and after workouts in warm to hot weather condition. A few glasses before and after working out is recommended, while drinking a little water every 15 minutes while exercising is also recommended.
Adjustment
Don’t rush it. Take time to get used to the warmer weather. It may take your body a few days to adjust to the heat. Gradually increase the length and intensity of your workouts.
Clothing
Wear lightweight, loose fitting clothes that wick away moisture.
