Nigeria’s D’Tigress have produced a shock thanks to a 75-62 win over Australia, the world’s third-ranked women’s basketball team, in their opening match at the women’s basketball event of the ongoing Olympic Games in Paris.

Promise Amukamara starred for D’Tigress with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists in a win that marks a significant milestone in their campaign at the Paris 2024 Olympics, showcasing the African team’s strength and resilience against one of the sport’s powerhouses.

Australia committed many turnovers and Nigeria capitalised fully on the Opals’ poor form to go control the first half, even enjoying an 11-0 run at a point to go into the half-time break 13 points up with 41-28 the score.

Australia as expected showed more effort at the start of the second half, cutting Nigeria’s lead to just five points by the end of the third quarter. But D’Tigress regained their composure to see off the Aussies with a great push in the final quarter and seal the win.

This is only the second time that Nigeria has secured a win at the Olympic Games, and the first since 2004, underscoring the remarkable progress of D’Tigress on the international stage. Their performance not only highlights their growth but also sets a positive tone for their future matches in the tournament.

D’Tigress now face the challenge of maintaining their momentum as they continue their campaign in Group B, which includes formidable opponents Canada and host nation France.

Later today, Group B rivals France and Canada will go head-to-head, adding further intrigue to the group stage. With Nigeria’s impressive win, the dynamics of Group B are sure to shift, intensifying the competition as each team strives to make it out of the group stage.

Under the guidance of Coach Rena Wakama, D’Tigress have delivered an impressive result, earning Nigeria its first victory at the ongoing Olympics and setting a high standard for the matches to come.
