Plymouth Argyle goalkeeper, Conor Hazard, made a last-second save to deny Darwin Nunez as the lower league side held on for a famous 1-0 win over Premier League leaders, Liverpool, in the FA Cup.
Liverpool may have dominated possession, but Plymouth Argyle were resolute for 99 minutes of the encounter to pull off the shock of the weekend.
In what should have been an “easy” “straightforward” result for the Reds, instead Arne Slot paid the price for making 10 changes and naming relative unknowns on the bench as the eight-time champions were knocked out.
The opening half had nothing worthy of note, though the visitors suffered an early injury blow when defender, Joe Gomez, hobbled off the pitch and was replaced by 20-year-old Isaac Mabaya.
Following a goalless first half, Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott handled the ball in box and center referee Sam Barrott pointed to the spot. Ryan Hardie stepped up and converted from 12 yards to give the home side a shock lead in the 53rd minute.
It could have been 2-0 to the hosts shortly after when defender, Nikola Katic, flicked the ball on and Hardie’s shot struck the right post. Katic ended the game with 11 headed clearances in part of the Argyle’s resolve against the Reds.
Arne Slot brought on Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez for Mabaya in a desperate attempt to salvage the game, but it was all to no avail as Hazard made two saves in stoppage time to help the hosts hold on for a famous victory.
