18-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju has become the youngest-ever chess world champion after defeating defending champion, Ding Liren, 7.5-6.5 in their best-of-14 world championship final in Singapore.

The teenage Indian took advantage of an error by his more experienced Chinese opponent in the final game to become the 18th different world champion in chess and just the second from India after Viswanathan Anand.

Gukesh’s stock is at an all-time high as he has claimed the chess crown four years younger than when the sport’s legend, Garry Kasparov, won his first world title aged 22 years back in 1995.

His victory also puts more eyes on India as a haven for chess geniuses, with Gukesh’s win coming two years after another Indian player, Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, stunned the sport by beating Magnus Carlsen in 2022.
