Reigning world champion, Gukesh Dommaraju, has come from a losing position to hand chess legend and world number one, Magnus Carlsen, a shock defeat at the ongoing 2025 Norway Chess tournament in Oslo on Sunday.

Carlsen was headed to victory in the contest until the 19-year-old world champion took full advantage of an error by the Norwegian in the closing stages of the game to claim a first ever win over the leading grandmaster at a classical.

The result saw 34-year-old Carlsen instinctively punch the playing table before immediately apologising for the outburst and congratulating Gukesh for the win, before storming out in frustration at losing the match to the rising Indian grandmaster.

For Gukesh, the win takes him up to third after round six at 2025 Norway Chess tournament with an 8.5 score, one point behind Carlsen, while Fabiano Caruana of the United States is now level on points with Carlsen to hold the joint-lead with four rounds left to play in the competition.
