Leganes have ended the historic winning run of Atletico Madrid a week shy of it being three months old thanks to a surprise 1-0 win over the La Liga leaders on Saturday.
Atletico last lost a match back in October before embarking on a club-record run of 15 wins in all competitions that saw Rojiblancos go top of the league with eight straight wins.
Antoine Griezmann saw an effort come off the Leganes woodwork just moments after Julian Alvarez came close to scoring within the opening 15 minutes of the match.
After a goalless first half at the Estadio Municipal, Matija Nastasic put Leganes ahead four minutes into the second half to set the alarm bells ringing for their more illustrious opposition.
Griezmann had the chance to pull Atletico back on level terms with two minutes to go after Leganes’ Sergio Gonzalez Poirrier was adjudged by VAR to have handled the ball in the box.
However, the Frenchman sent the resultant spot-kick wide of target. Substitute, Angel Correa was next to miss for Atletico, as the Leganes keeper denied him when put through on goal in stoppage time.
The result leaves Atletico with 44 points from 20 games played, one point ahead of Real Madrid, who host Las Palmas on Sunday. Barcelona are third with 38 points and can go within three points of Atletico with a win at Getafe later on Saturday.
