Everton have confirmed the appointment of David Moyes as the club’s new manager in what will be a second spell for the Scotsman to replace Sean Dyche, who was sacked on Thursday.
Moyes previously managed Everton for 11 years between 2002 and 2013, reaching the FA Cup final in 2009, before taking up the vacancy at Manchester United following the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.
“David is widely recognised as one of the Premier League’s most experienced and accomplished managers, having led Everton for more than 500 matches,” Everton said in a statement announcing the appointment.
61-year-old Moyes has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract which will see him overseeing the Merseyside club until June 2027, with avoiding relegation from the Premier League this season the main target for him now.
“We are pleased that David is joining us at this pivotal time in Everton’s history,” Everton Chairman, Marc Watts said. ”With over a decade of experience at the club, he is the right leader to propel us through our final season at Goodison Park and into our new stadium.”
On his part, Moyes said, “It’s great to be back! I enjoyed 11 wonderful and successful years at Everton and didn’t hesitate when I was offered the opportunity to rejoin this great club.”
The Toffees are just a point off the relegation zone, sitting 16th on the Premier League table after 19 matches.
