The Confederation of African Football (CAF) have withdrawn the approval of Ghana’s Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi no thanks to failure to maintain some technical standards which include the playing field itself.

CAF’s decision was fuelled by observations made during the recent 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying match between Ghana and Angola at the venue on September 5, 2024.

From the observations, it was determined that the stadium did not meet the required standards for hosting Category 3 international matches.

Baba Yara Stadium was proposed as a possible venue to host international football games for the Black Stars but its playing field has worsened over time as it now spots uneven surfaces, poor drainage, and inadequate grass cover.

“It is important to note that, prior to the match, CAF had expressed concerns about the suitability of Baba Yara Sports Stadium for hosting top-tier international fixtures,” the football governing body stated.

CAF added that, “Persistent issues at this venue, as well as others in Ghana, such as Cape Coast Stadium and Accra Sports Stadium, have also been noted.”

As a result, Ghana’s next official matches will likely be played outside the country.
