Former Manchester United full-back, Gary Neville, believes that Chelsea should replace current number one, Robert Sanchez, after the goalkeeper’s error in Saturday’s Premier League defeat to Manchester City.
The Blues lost 3-1 at the Etihad, with Sanchez at fault for City’s second goal by Erling Haaland. The Spaniard came rushing out of his goal to allow Haaland lob him with 22 minutes left on the clock.
“What is the goalkeeper doing? Why is he there? Such a poor, poor decision,” Neville said while commentating on Haaland’s goal.
“We have to talk about the goalkeeper. That wouldn’t have been a goal if the goalkeeper isn’t about 25 yards off his line at the edge of the box,” The ex-England international added on his podcast after the game.
Neville continued, “What is he doing? It’s too important a position and I think Chelsea at this point in time are going to have to look at it. He’s making far too many errors week in, week out. It was a mini turning point in the game.”
Sanchez has been at fault for a significant number of errors this season, most recently at Stamford Bridge when his blunder gifted Wolves a goal last Monday in a game Chelsea eventually won.
Neville insists Maresca should look for a new goalkeeper, if he is serious about turning his side into genuine title contenders.
