Talks have opened between Formula One and the government of Thailand regarding the staging of an F1 race in the country in the near future.
Formula 1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali met with Thailand’s Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to discuss plans for a street-circuit grand prix in Bangkok.
Shinawatra said the government would commission a feasibility study into the possibility of a race holding in the capital from 2028.
He said: “I believe that all Thai people will benefit from organising this event, whether it is large-scale infrastructure investment, job creation, new income generation, and importing new technologies and innovations.”
Stefano Domenicali, who has been the head of Formula One since 2021, described the plans to hold a race in the country as impressive.
There is an existing track in Buriram, in north-east Thailand, which is accredited by the FIA – the world governing body for motorsport.
The current F1 schedule of 24 races includes four in the Asia-Pacific region.
