Former Manchester United star Terry Gibson has commented on Chelsea’s decision to sign Samuel Omorodion despite being linked with other world-class strikers.
The Blues are close to signing the Spanish striker from Atletico Madrid for a reported fee of £35 million. The Premier League giants will soon announce the signing of the Spaniard, who is expected to sign a seven-year deal with the Blues.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Gibson believes Chelsea are getting themselves a potential in Omorodion. “No one is being too critical of Omorodion.”
He continued, “It’s incredible that Chelsea have lumped in straightaway, so Atletico Madrid paid six million euros, and they are going to sell him for 30 million. They are buying potential; centre forwards do cost a lot of money.”
Gibson added, “They will be hoping that in the future, the £30-odd million they are paying Atletico is going to be money well spent, but it’s a tough one, to be honest.”
Omorodion’s announcement as a new Chelsea player was delayed due to his involvement with the Spanish under-23 team at the ongoing Olympic games in Paris.
Team Spain will face the host France in the final of the men’s football event on Friday.
