Kenya’s Edwin Kibet and Ethiopia’s Guta Meseret Hirpa have won the men’s and women’s category of the 2025 Lagos City Marathon on Saturday, with Kibet taking home the ₦75 million grand prize.
Kibet, who won the 2023 edition of the marathon, claimed the $50,000 prize after crossing the line with a time of 2:14:06. The Kenyan was third last year behind Bernard Sang in what was a clean sweep of the podium places for Kenya last year.
Interestingly, Kibet only arrived in Nigeria yesterday around 6pm, and didn’t have enough rest from travelling, but he still showed great strength to win the Lagos marathon.
Meanwhile, Hirpa crossed the line in after 2:37:04 to lead an Ethiopian one-two as she was followed by compatriot, Aleminesh Herpha, who finished in second in a time of 2:38:01:39, beating Jerono Peris by the microseconds as the Kenyan also clocked 2:38:01:39.
