Novak Djokovic captured the gold medal in the men’s singles tennis at the 2024 Olympic Games, overcoming Spanish rival Carlos Alcaraz in a tightly contested final at the Philippe Chatrier Stadium in Roland Garros.
37-year-old Djokovic delivered a stunning performance to defeat Alcaraz 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) in what many are calling the match of the year. This victory marked his first Olympic gold medal and completed his career Golden Slam.
The Serbian star joins a club of only five players in tennis history to have won all four Grand Slam titles as well as the Olympic gold medal in their careers, Steffi Graf, Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams being the others.
Just three weeks after losing to Alcaraz in straight sets at Wimbledon and having not won a title all season, the 37-year-old Serbian, donning the red of his country, showcased his resilience and skill to win in straight sets.
“I’m overwhelmed with everything I’m feeling right now. Feeling different emotions. Too proud. Too happy. Thrilled with the possibility to win a gold for the first time in my career for my country. Arguably the biggest success I had,” said Djokovic.
Alcaraz, in his Olympic debut, displayed remarkable talent and potential, earning the silver medal. The bronze went to Italian Lorenzo Musetti, who triumphed over Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime in another intense match on Saturday.
