Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota has died on Thursday in a car accident in Spain alongside his brother, Andre Silva. The sad event comes just two weeks after the 28-year-old married his lover, Rute Cardoso, and seven months after the couple welcomed a baby.

According to local police, the car left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking another car around 12:30am local time on the A-52 motorway in the municipality of Cernadilla in Zamora, Spain. He and his 26-year-old brother are reported to have been in a Lamborghini Aventador, which caught fire.
“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota,” the Premier League champions stated on Thursday. “The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.”
The statement adds, “Liverpool FC will be making no further comment at this time and request the privacy of Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates and club staff is respected as they try to come to terms with an unimaginable loss. We will continue to provide them with our full support.”

Jota had previously played for Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League before joining Liverpool in 2020. At Anfield, the Portugal international made over 180 appearances for the club, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
He was also part of the Portugal squad that claimed the 2025 edition of the UEFA Nations League, beating Spain in a penalty shoot-out following a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena in Germany in June.
