Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea is set to extend his stay at Fiorentina with a new contract which will run until the summer of 2028 following an impressive debut season with the club in the Serie A and Conference League.
34-year-old De Gea helped La Viola finish sixth in the Italian top flight, ensuring they qualified for the Conference League play-off round. They played in the same competition during the past season, but were eliminated in the semi-finals by Real Betis.
The contract extension represents a major change in fortunes for De Gea. The former Spain international began to make mistakes at a worrying rate during his final few seasons with United and spent the entirety of the 2023-24 campaign as a free agent after he was released by the Red Devils.
De Gea kept 11 clean sheets and saved two of three penalties he faced during 35 Serie A matches this season. He also picked up an assist in a 3-1 victory over Hellas Verona last November.
His new contract is expected to be announced soon even though Fiorentina are currently without a manager. Raffaele Palladino was most recently in charge but the former Juventus winger agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent.
