Liverpool recorded their first Premier League win of 2025 although it required a Darwin Nunez brace in stoppage time to secure a 2-0 victory over Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.

The Reds had drawn their last two league fixtures against Manchester United and Nottingham Forest, and were in need of a win to maintain their title push.

But Brentford started the game well and should have taken the lead in the fifth minute only for Mikkel Damsgaard to squander a golden chance with the goal gaping.

The visitors could have scored in the 15th minute when Ibrahima Konate found Luis Diaz in the box, but the Colombian winger miscued his header.

Ryan Gravenberch then tested Brentford keeper, Mark Flekken, with an effort from outside the box, followed by Virgil van Dijk heading wide from the resulting corner.

A long-range effort from Dominik Szoboszlai skimmed the bar, while Cody Gakpo wasted a good chance from a quick counter shortly before the interval as Liverpool dominated without finding a breakthrough.

The second period offered entertainment just like the first, with Alexis Mac Allister heading Andy Robertson’s corner into the side netting before Brentford nearly nicked a goal on the break, with Alisson making saves from Bryan Mbuemo, Kevin Schade and Yoane Wissa.

However, the Bees’ resistance was finally broken in stoppage time as substitute Darwin Nunez tapped in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross from close range in the 91st minute to give the Reds the lead.

Three miinutes later, the Uruguayan striker added a second with an emphatic finish to seal the points for Arne Slot’s men.

The win sees Liverpool remain top with 50 points from 21 games, seven ahead of second-placed Arsenal who host Aston Villa later on Saturday, while Brentford are 11th with 28 points from 22 games.
