Portugal are through to the UEFA Nations League final after coming from a goal down to defeat Germany, with Al Nassr star, Cristiano Ronaldo, scoring the winner for the Selecao at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Wednesday night.
Following a goalless first half at the venue for the Champions League final over the weekend, Bayer Leverkusen’s highly-sought midfielder, Florian Wirtz, broke the deadlock three minutes into the second half with a header from Joshua Kimmich’s ball.
Portugal boss, Roberto Martinez, made a triple change 10 minutes later and the move yielded results as one of the substitutes, Francisco Conceicao, levelled the scores with a stunning long-range effort for Portugal five minutes after coming off the bench.
Julian Nagelsmann also made a triple substitution moments before Portugal’s equaliser, but the Germany coach would see his team fall behind five minutes after conceding the equaliser as Ronaldo popped up with the winner.
Bruno Fernandes, who squashed speculation of him leaving Manchester United ahead of the match, played in Nuno Mendes, whose cross found Ronaldo, who just about stayed onside to slot in from six yards out past Marc-Andre ter Stegen for his 137th international goal.
Germany substitute Karim Adeyemi struck the near post from a tight angle not long after as the home side searched for a way back into the match, while Conceicao headed just wide for Portugal, before him and Diogo Jota forced Ter Stegen to a spectacular double-save late on as Portugal claimed the win.
The 2019 Nations League winners now await the winner of the second semi-final between France and Spain; winners of the two editions after Portugal’s title. The final will be played on Sunday in Munich.
