Coco Gauff Overcomes Major Scare To Adavnce in Madrid Open

2023 US Open champion Coco Gauff avoided an upset on her way to the third round of the Madrid Open in Spain, recovering from a poor opening set to edge out Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska in three sets.

The American was bageled in the opening set and trailed during the second, before digging deep to take the second set and outmuscle her opponent in the final set to seal a 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Yastremska and move onto the next round.

Elsewhere in the Spanish capital, world number two Iga Swiatek also survived a scare from Filipino talent Alexandra Eala, before turning things around to punch her way into the Madrid Open third round with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and 16 minutes.

Other third round qualifiers include Madison Keys, Emma Navarro, Beatriz Maia Haddad and Anna Kalinskaya.
