The United States have clinched the United Cup title after Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz got wins over their rivals from Poland in the mixed team event in Sydney, Australia.
20-year-old Gauff continued her winning streak on the tour with a 6-4 6-4 win over Iga Swiatek, with her last defeat coming to world number one, Aryna Sabalenka, back in October at the semi-final stage in Wuhan.
Meanwhile, Swiatek was reduced to tears at the end as the Pole played the match with her left thigh heavily strapped from the first set when she was 5-4 down against the American.
It is the second successive win for Gauff over Swiatek after the world number three beat the world number two at the WTA Finals last November on her way to winning that competition.
Fritz then followed up Gauff’s win in Sydney by claiming a 6-4 5-7 7-6 win over Hubert Hurkacz to seal a second United Cup title for the Americans after their triumph in the maiden edition in 2023.
