Coco Gauff announced herself to the world in 2019 when she defeated her idol and five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams at the tender age of 15. She was the youngest player to qualify for the main draw at Wimbledon in the open era and her performance against the legendary Venus Williams made headlines catapulted her into the limelight. She went on to reach the fourth round of the competition showcasing her extraordinary potential.

Since that Wimbledon debut, Gauff has continued to rise and develop in tennis. She has since won multiple WTA titles including the prestigious Linz Open in 2019, the Emilia Romagna Open in 2021, and most recently the US Open; her first major trophy at the age of 19. She is the first teenager to win the US Open since Serena Williams in 1999 which has led many to call her a Serena Williams regen.

The prodigy who has already won seven WTA tour singles titles and eight doubles titles defeated world no. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in September 2023 to win her first Grand Slam title and is currently ranked as world no. 3 in the workmen’s singles. The American prodigy and media darling is the new queen of the US Open; a monumental achievement at her age.

She is the first home winner of the US Open Women’s singles title since Sloane Stephen beat Madison Keys in the 2017 finals. With her most recent triumph, she has confirmed herself as a powerhouse in Women’s tennis who should not be written off for her age. She can and will definitely win more trophies.

Coco’s rise in the world of tennis has been nothing but exceptional, defying expectations and defeating known legends of the game. Her passion, skill, and strength at such a young age point to her maturity as a player who has a shot at becoming the absolute best in the world and could dethrone Serena Williams as the GOAT of women’s tennis. It won’t be a cakewalk, but if anyone is going to do it, at the moment, it looks like Coco Gauff.
