Chelsea Football Club is one of the most successful clubs in the Premier League and the FA Cup. The South London club boasts eight FA Cups. They won their last FA Cup in 2018 when they defeated Manchester United to win the trophy and since then it has been heartbreak after heartbreak in the competition. Chelsea have now lost three FA Cup finals in a row. They got to the finals and lost in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
In 2020, Chelsea lost the FA Cup final to Arsenal in a 2-1 thriller at Wembley Stadium under manager and club legend Frank Lampard. The Blues took the lead early within five minutes of the game but they could not hold on as Arsenal came from behind to beat them 2-1 thanks to Aubameyang who scored both goals to give Mikel Arteta his first silverware as Arsenal manager.
In 2021, Chelsea once again made it to the finals under Thomas Tuchel but lost 1-0 to Leicester City thanks to a 25-yard screamer from Youri Tielemans. That singular moment of brilliance was all the Foxes needed to win the trophy and extend the Blues FA Cup losing streak. It was heartbreak again for Chelsea. While they would later go on to win the Champions League that season, losing a final still hurts.
In 2022, Chelsea lost the FA Cup final to Liverpool 5-6 on penalties under Thomas Tuchel. They also lost the EFL Cup final to Liverpool earlier in the year on penalties. The tightly contested game remained goalless after 120 minutes and went to a penalty shootout. Cesar Azpilicueta and Mason Mount missed their penalties meaning Chelsea scored five out of seven penalties while Liverpool scored six of the seven penalties to win the competition and lift the trophy.
The Blues didn’t reach the finals of the FA Cup in 2023 but are now gearing up to reach the 2024 finals as they will face Man City in the semi-final for a chance to play their fourth FA Cup final in five years. In recent years, Chelsea has proven that they have what it takes to reach the FA Cup finals even though they may not win it. If they beat Man City in the semifinal they will face either Manchester United or Coventry in the finals.
The semi finals which will be played in April will determine whether Chelsea make it to yet another FA Cup final and who their opponents will be. Can Pochettino’s Chelsea defeat Man City to reach the FA Cup final? Can they finally end their run of losses and clinch the title this season? What do you think?
