Chelsea Set To Splash World-Record Fee for Star Defender

Women’s Super League champions Chelsea are set to sign defender Naomi Girma from NWSL outfit San Diego Wave for a world record fee.

24-year-old Girma has agreed terms to join Chelsea on a long-term deal for a fee believed to be the most expensive transfer for a female footballer, in the region of £900,000 ($1.1m) and it exceeds the £685,000 Bay FC paid for Zambia’s Racheal Kundananji in February 2024.

The fee also sees Girma become the first women’s million dollar player and she will become manager Sonia Bompastor’s first January signing at the club.

Girma became a priority target for Chelsea, having lost centre-back Kadeisha Buchanan to an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

The Blues were in a tussle with French side Olympique Lyon for her signature, with Girma widely regarded as one of the finest players in her position.
