Reigning Women’s Super League champions Chelsea have announced the arrival of England international defender Lucy Bronze from Barcelona Femini on a free transfer following the expiration of her contract with the Spanish giants.
Bronze has left Barcelona on a higher after helping them win a second consecutive Champions League title. Now, she joins Sonia Bompastor’s side on a two-year deal to strengthen the Blues on a run of five successive WSL titles.
Speaking after signing for Chelsea, the 32-year-old made it clear she wants to keep winning trophies. “Playing football at the highest level, I want to do it for as long as possible; winning trophies for as long as possible,” Bronze said in a statement on Chelsea’s official site.
For a player with such an illustrious career to look back on, she revealed her motivation for joining Chelsea. “People always say that I’ve won so many trophies and I’ve won the Champions League so many times. But I’ve never won the Champions League with an English team in my career.”
She added, “Being English and playing abroad were fantastic experiences and I wouldn’t change it for anything. But I’ve never done that with an English club and want to achieve this.”
Bronze becomes Chelsea’s fourth signing in this summer’s transfer window, joining midfielder Julia Bartel who’s also arrived from Barcelona, as well as Sandy Baltimore and Oriane Jean-Francois who both signed from PSG.
