A second-half masterclass has earned Chelsea the UEFA Conference League title thanks to a resounding 4-1 win over Real Betis on Wednesday night in Wroclaw, Poland, as the Blues become the first team ever to win four different European club competitions.
Real Betis broke the deadlock after nine minutes when Isco sent a pass across for Abde Ezzalzouli to score, while Filip Jorgensen made a stunning save minutes later to keep Marc Bartra from doubling the Spanish side’s lead.
The Blues managed to go into the half-time break just down by a goal, and came back with more intensity to their game in the second half, finally breaking Betis’ resistance after 20 minutes of the second half at the Miejski Stadium.
Enzo Fernandez levelled the scores for Chelsea with a header from Cole Palmer’s cross, before Nicolas Jackson was on the end of another Palmer cross to complete the turnaround for Enzo Maresca’s team after 70 minutes.
Substitutes, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jadon Sancho combined to make it 3-1 for Chelsea as Sancho – on loan from Manchester United – made some space for himself in the area before smashing past Betis goalkeeper, Adrian.
Moises Caicedo wrapped up the emphatic win with the fourth in stoppage time as Chelsea became the first team to have won the Champions League, Europa League, Conference League, and (now defunct) Cup Winners Cup.
The Conference League title is Chelsea’s ninth continental title and gives Maresca a major silverware to end his first season at Stamford Bridge.
