Spanish tennis star, Carlos Alcaraz, has retained the French Open title in phenomenal style, coming from two sets and a match point down to claim a dramatic five sets victory over Jannik Sinner in Paris on Sunday.
Alcaraz’s Roland Garros reign looked set to end when world number one Sinner closed in on victory at 5-3 in the fourth set. But the 22-year-old defending champion fought back to win 4-6, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 7-6 after five hours and 29 minutes – the longest French Open final in history.
The win is made more remarkable as Sinner made it to the final without dropping a set along the way, and looked set to win a first Roland Garros crown without a dropped set as he claimed the first two sets.
With the win, Alcaraz becomes the first men’s player to win a Grand Slam title after saving match point since Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer in an epic Wimbledon final back in 2019. It is also the first time Alcaraz has won a match after losing the first two sets.
