Manchester United are through to the UEFA Europa League last eight after a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick propelled the Red Devils to a 4-1 win over Real Sociedad at Old Trafford on Thursday night, completing a 5-2 aggregate win for the Premier League side.
The night did not start as planned for United, though, as Mikel Oyarzabal put the La Liga side ahead after 10 minutes with a penalty conceded after Matthijs de Ligt brought the forward down in the United area.
It took just six minutes for United to be back on level terms with a penalty of their own, with Bruno Fernandes converting from 12 yards after Rasmus Hojlund was fouled in the Sociedad area by Igor Zubeldia.
The match saw its third penalty of the night five minutes into the second half when Aritz Elustondo brough down Patrick Dorgu, with Fernandes stepping up again to convert and put United ahead.
Dorgu was in the thick of action again just after the hour mark when he was brought down in a last-man challenge by Jon Aramburu, who was sent off by the referee as Sociedad were reduced to 10 men.
The referee pointed to the spot when the full-back was brought down in the area again in the 84th minute, before overturning the decision as it appeared Fernandes would not end the night with a hat-trick.
Except Fernandes would go on to complete his hat-trick with three minutes to go, getting the ball from Alejandro Garnacho to sweep home and seal the win for the Red Devils. Diogo Dalot would put the icing on the cake in stoppage time with the fourth for United.
