Manchester United remain in the lower half of the Premier League standings following a disappointing 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford to Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.
Both teams came into the game having won their last respective matches, with United seeing off Southampton 3-1 while Brighton overcame Ipswich Town 2-0.
It was the visitors who looked threatening from the onset on Sunday, and they soon found the opener after just five minutes through Yankuba Minteh’s finish off a squared ball from Kaoru Mitoma.
Bart Verbruggen’s loose ball led to Joshua Zirkzee being hauled down in the box by Carlos Baleba, leading to a penalty and Bruno Fernandes made no mistake from 12 yards midway through the first-half.
Brighton had the ball in the net eight minutes into the second half when João Pedro slotted home from close range as United failed to deal with a loose ball in the area.
However, VAR intervened to cut the Seagulls’ celebrations short, with Jan Paul van Hecke adjudged to have fouled Diogo Dalot in the build-up to the goal.
The Seagulls didn’t have to wait for long to retake the lead as Kaoru Mitoma turned home Yakuba Minteh’s cross at the back post on the hour mark.
Then the points were all but wrapped up 14 minutes from time, no thanks to a calamitous error from United goalkeeper André Onana.
United’s goalkeeper palmed a stray cross onto the path of Georginio Rutter, who then tucked the ball into the net for Brighton’s third.
The result sees United drop to 13th spot on the Premier League table, while back-to-back victories for Brighton have elevated the Seagulls to ninth spot.
