Manchester City has been left stunned in the Premier League after falling to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday, losing top spot to Liverpool as a result.
The champions went into the match looking to bounce back from the Carabao Cup exit at Tottenham Hotspur in midweek against the Cherries that have never beaten City in 20 previous league meetings, losing all 14 previous games in the Premier League.
Guardiola’s men were also looking to extend their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 33 matches, but Bournemouth started the game with high intensity and already forced Ederson to make a double save to deny Antoine Semenyo and Justin Kluivert in quick succession.
The Vitaly Stadium didn’t wait long to celebrate a goal as Semenyo got the ball past Ederson to put the home side in front after only nine minutes and leave the visitors rocked.
Bournemouth started the second half like the first, with Evanilson forcing a save out of Ederson in the opening minutes of the half. The striker would find a way past City’s number one just after the hour mark as the home side went 2-0 up.
James Tavernier almost made it 3-0 four minutes later, only to see his effort from 25 yards out beat Ederson but bounce off the City post.
Josko Gvardiol set up a tense finale at the Vitality Stadium when he pulled one back for the visitors in the 82nd minute with what is his sixth goal in eight away league games.
Erling Haaland was whiskers away from levelling the scores in stoppage time, seeing his goal-bound effort from five yards kept out by the Bournemouth keeper, who heaved a huge sigh of relief when Haaland’s follow-up met the post instead of the net as Bournemouth held on for a famous win over City.
The result allows Liverpool to go top of the league following a 2-1 win over Brighton at Anfield thanks to two goals in three second-half minutes from Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah.
