Victor Boniface marked the return of league football after the international break with a goal for Bayer Leverkusen in the 3-1 win over Bochum in a Bundesliga match on Friday night.

Boniface, who made two substitute appearances in World Cup Qualifiers for the Super Eagles, started in attack alongside Patrik Schick and scored the winner for the title contenders.

Aleix Garcia put Xabi Alonso’s side ahead midway through the first half with a sumptuous goal, though the joy was short-lived as Bochum equalised only five minutes later to silence the BayArena crowd.

Boniface thought he’d restored Leverkusen’s lead on the hour mark, only for the goal to be cancelled. But it didn’t take long for the Nigerian to get the BayArena crowd buzzing again as he struck in the 66th minute.

Amine Adli put the icing on the cake for Leverkusen, scoring 15 minutes after coming off the bench to seal an important win for the reigning Bundesliga champions.
