Former Olympic champion Belinda Bencic booked her spot in the quarter-finals at Indian Wells following a three-sets victory over Coco Gauff.
The 28-year-old Swiss continued her fine form since returning from maternity leave by beating Gauff 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the last-eight in two hours and 28 minutes.
The win means Bencic will next face reigning Australian Open champion Madison Keys, who beat Wimbledon semi-finalist Donna Vekic 4-6, 7-6, 6-3.
Meanwhile, world number one Aryna Sabalenka advanced into the quarter-finals courtesy of a 6-1, 6-2 success against British lucky loser Sonay Kartal in just over an hour.
