A highly anticipated El Clasico in the Spanish Super Cup final turned into a one-sided affair in Saudi Arabia as Barcelona came from a goal down to defeat Real Madrid 5-2 to secure a record 15th Super Cup title.
Kylian Mbappe had given Madrid an early lead against the run of play with a good solo run and finish, but it took only 15 minutes for Barca to respond through Lamine Yamal.
Robert Lewandowski then converted from the spot to put the Catalans in front after 36 minutes before Raphinha’s powerful header beat Thibaut Courtois three minutes later as Hansi Flick’s men ran their opponents ragged.
Raphinha went from goalscorer to provider deep into first-half stoppage time, taking the ball into the Madrid box before setting up Alejandro Balde for a cool finish into the bottom corner to put Barca 4-1 up going into the break.
It took only three minutes of the second half for Barcelona to make it 5-1 through Raphinha, and despite going down to 10 men and conceding from a Rodrygo free-kick as a result of Wojciech Szczseny’s foul on Mbappe outside the area, Barca’s never looked threatened for the rest of the game.
The win is Hansi Flick’s first title as Barcelona coach, and the second win over Madrid in as many El Clasico meetings, having won 4-0 earlier in the season in La Liga.
