La Liga’s Atletico Madrid have become one of the first major teams to crash out of the FIFA Club World Cup despite getting a 1-0 win over Botafogo in their final group stage match of the competition at the Rose Bowl Stadium in California.

An 87th minute strike from Antoine Griezmann handed Atletico Madrid victory over Botafogo on Monday, but the result was not enough for Diego Simeone’s side as they needed two or more goals to ensure qualification.

The Spanish giants were made to rue a dismal opening match display against PSG, finishing on six points with the French champions and Botafogo. PSG secured top spot in Group B thanks to a superior goal difference, with Botafogo joining them in the last 16.

While Atletico head back home, PSG could be in for a reunion with Lionel Messi if Inter Miami finish second in Group A, which would also set up an all-Brazilian affair for Botafogo against Palmeiras in the Club World Cup last 16 stage.
