RB Leipzig have crashed out of the new-format UEFA Champions League after falling 3-2 to Aston Villa in a dramatic encounter on Tuesday night in Germany.
The Bundesliga outfit needed a win to maintain a chance of reaching the next phase of the Champions League through the playoff route, while a win would take Villa a step closer to automatic qualification.
John McGinn gave the visitors a third minute lead, but Leipzig made it 1-1 through Lois Openda just before the half-hour mark, with both teams heading into the break on level terms.
Jhon Duran, on as a substitute at half time, put the Premier League side back in front with a stunning long-range strike at the end of a well-worked passing sequence by Villa.
The Colombian striker scored again just before the hour mark only to be denied a brace by VAR. Leipzig fought back to level the game four minutes later thanks to Christoph Baumgartner.
A draw would’ve left Leipzig needing a miracle to make the playoffs, and Villa ensured any hopes were dashed by going ahead again through Ross Barkley with what turned out to be the winning goal.
The result lifts Aston Villa up to third with 13 points, ahead of Wednesday night’s fixtures. Leipzig on their part remain without a win after six matches in 34th position.
