Defending Madrid Open champion Iga Swiatek booked her spot in the quarter-finals of the tournament, following a three-sets victory over Russia’s Diana Shnaider.
The world number two was not at her best – committing over 50 unforced errors, but managed to save 11 of the 13 break points she faced to pip Shnaider 6-0, 6-7, 6-4.
Swiatek will now face Madison Keys – who defeated her in the semi-finals of the Australian Open on her way to a maiden Grand Slam title – in the last-eight, after the American took out Donna Vekic of Croatia 6-2, 6-3.
Meanwhile, world number one Aryna Sabalenka also progressed to the last-eight courtesy of a comfortable 6-2, 6-4 victory over American Peyton Stearns, while Ukrainian 17th seed Elina Svitolina accounted for Greekwoman Maria Sakkari 6-3, 6-4.
