William Saliba received a first red card in his senior career as Arsenal fell to a shock 2-0 loss at Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.
Saliba initially got a yellow card for his foul on Evanilson just over the half-way circle, but the punishment was upgraded to a red card following a VAR review.
It means the French defender will miss Arsenal’s crucial clash against current Premier League leaders, Liverpool, when the Reds visit the Emirates Stadium next weekend.
The sending off in the 30th minute put an already uninspired Arsenal more on the backfoot in the south coast, with Bournemouth finally breaking the deadlock in the second half.
Ryan Christie put the Cherries ahead as he finished off a well-worked corner kick, before Justin Kluivert sealed only a second win in history over Arsenal from the spot after Jakub Kiwior’s error led to David Raya bringing down Evanilson in the area.
The result means Arsenal miss out on the chance to end the day top of the league, with Manchester City and Liverpool to play on Sunday. Bournemouth on their part rise into the top half of the league table.
