Amad Diallo Strikes Late as Manchester United Draw With Liverpool in Anfield Thriller

Liverpool missed the chance to go eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table following a thrilling 2-2 draw with visiting Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday.

The Red Devils put up a display worthy of praise as they scored their first goals at Anfield since 2018 to earn a deserved draw against their in-form rivals.

Following a goalless first half, the hosts went behind upon resumption of the second half as Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez notched his first goal in two years with a rifled shot into the roof of Alisson’s goal.

Despite the Reds’ slow start, Cody Gakpo levelled for Arne Slot’s men soon after when he cut in on his right foot which sent Matthijs de Ligt sliding off the pitch before smashing a shot past Andre Onana.

Liverpool soon got a penalty when Alexis Mac Allister’s header from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s cross hit De Ligt’s raised left arm, with referee Michael Oliver awarding the penalty after VAR review having initially waved for play to continue.

That was the cue for Mo Salah to step up and beat Onana from 12 yards to put the Reds ahead.

But there was still time for United to grab the equaliser as Amad Diallo nipped in front of Andy Robertson to stab home Alejandro Garnacho’s cross to snatch a point.

Both teams tried getting a stoppage time winner, but it was United that came closest to doing just that when Joshua Zirkzee teed up Harry Maguire, only for the England defender to fire his effort over the bar, much to the relief of the Liverpool faithful.

Despite the draw, the Red Devils remain seven points above the relegation zone and 13 points adrift of the top-four, while Liverpool still stay top with 46 points and a game in hand.
