Manchester United advance to the FA Cup fourth round following a penalty shootout win against Arsenal in a thrilling encounter which saw Altay Bayindir emerge as the hero for United at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

The Red Devils had their stand-in goalkeeper to thank as he saved a penalty from Arsenal skipper, Martin Odegaard, in regulation time before denying Kai Havertz in the ensuing shootout as the Gunners rued their missed opportunities.

United captain, Bruno Fernandes, had fired the visitors into the lead early in the second half before his compatriot, Diogo Dalot, was sent-off on the hour mark for a second bookable offence – much to the anger of United players who protested the booking.

Arsenal wasted no time to take advantage as the Gunners levelled scores through Gabriel Magalhaes’s half-volley although Mikel Arteta’s side went on to waste a flurry of chances to win the tie in regulation time and were made to pay.

One of those chances came 10 minutes after Gabriel’s goal when Odegaard saw his penalty saved by Bayindir as the match ended 1-1, before going to penalty shootout as no further goals were scored after extra-time.

United scored all five of their spot-kicks, with the much-criticised Joshua Zirkzee slotting home the winning penalty in front of the jubilant travelling support, while Bayindir saved Havertz’s effort to condemn the hosts to an early cup exit.
